Noise Cancelling Headphones Review

Noise cancelling headphones use circuitry inside the headset that blocks out external background noise when activated. This can be extremely useful when travelling on an aircraft or a train for instance, when there is constant, low-level background noise present.

This noise cancelling headphones review page aims to give you independent reviews and advice on the latest noise cancelling headphones from top name manufacturers such as Sony, Sennheiser, Goldring and Audio Technica among others.

Noise Cancelling Headphones Review

Sony’s most affordable noise cancelling headphones are the MDR-NC6, they are lightweight and comfortable to wear giving good rich sound quality. The headphones fold away neatly for compact storage in the soft padded carrying case which is supplied. On the down side, the noise cancelling abilities were not that great but having said that, for the price, performance is more than acceptable.

At the other end of the scale, the MDR-NC50 are Sony’s most expensive noise cancelling headphones offering a substantial full size over-ear design giving excellent noise reduction combined with a distinctly upmarket feel. The rich sound quality is excellent with powerful bass response and detailed sound. A neat feature is a monitor switch on the side of the earcup which mutes the music to let in outside sound should you so desire. The Sony MDR-NC50 are a bulky pair of headphones which may not appeal to some users, they may also be unsuitable for smaller MP3 players that do not have sufficient power to drive them, making the sound seem quieter than it should. However, these noise cancelling headphones are an excellent buy and are comparable to competitors at much higher price points.

The Sony MDR-NC11 in ear noise cancelling headphones give a great combination of economical design and remarkable performance. These earbuds offer fantastic noise cancellation across all frequency ranges and they are very comfortable to wear, lightweight with excellent sound quality. At a price of around £60, the Sony MDR-NC11 in ear noise cancellation headphones are great value and come recommended.

Sennheiser manufacture a wide range of noise cancelling headphones including the PXC150, PXC250 and the PXC300. We are going to consider the Sennheiser PXC300. The design is similar to the other headphones in the PXC series; the PXC300 looks stylish in black with aluminium trim with comfortable leather padding on the ear cups and a practical, lightweight, compact foldaway design. The noise cancelling performance is excellent, very much comparable with the Bose QuietComfort 2, blocking background noise over the range of frequencies, giving an extremely comfortable listening experience. The audio performance is also excellent even when operating as normal headphones. The Sennheiser PXC300 noise cancelling headphones are highly recommended, as are the rest of the headphones in the PXC range including the PXC150 and PXC250, you can be confident with Sennheiser whatever your budget.

The Philips HN060 in ear noise cancelling headphones are an effective option for the regular traveller on a budget. The earbuds are comfortable to wear and the active noise reduction significantly reduces background noise particularly at lower frequencies. The sound quality is good, if not outstanding, but the sound is natural with no excessive bass. The Philips HN060 in ear noise cancelling headphones are not the best I have tested but are a good option for the money.
